London born artist Raphael Masters exploded onto the sports fashion world after some t-shirt designs were spotted by Swatch at a US water sports expo. Within a year he was designing for some of the worlds foremost sports fashion houses including Elho Freestyle, Wilson Sporting, Pryde, Swatch and Ellesse. By the early nineties Ray was being hailed internationally as a leader in sports related art.
Following his stellar career as a sports fashion designer, Ray Masters directed his talents to creating art and graphics for the international motor sports industry. During the 90’s he was the most prolific artist in North American auto racing. He was official artist and supplier for many of the top race tracks, events, organizations and teams creating everything from posters, clothing and event related materials to original paintings and sell out limited edition prints.
During this period he began painting more canvases and large-scale murals for collectors and corporations around the world. His many patrons include sports heroes, Chris Evert, Don Shula, Dan Marino, Emerson Fittipaldi, Rick Mears and many political and business leaders. Corporations and museums including Philip Morris, The Ferrari Museum of Japan, Daytona USA Museum and the prestigious Jaguar Cars Museum in England. For many years Chris Evert commissioned Ray Masters to be the official artist for her glamorous Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament and Charity Gala. He was also the official artist for many other charity events and organizations raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children in need and other causes close to his heart.
In 1999 Ray and his wife Vivienne moved to Maui. His work immediately began to reflect this new phase of his life on the paradise island. His love of artists Miro, Picasso and Warhol were however still evident in his humorous and colorful paitings. Ray’s art has appeared in galleries and exhibitions across North America including Miami, Palm Beach, Los Angeles, New York (Paul Newman and Mario Andretti arrived there in a 2 seat IndyCar!) Vancouver and Maui, as well as in international press and television.
Recently Ray has directed his talents towards his childhood love, photography. Spurred on by his popular photographs of his dog, Sevin, Ray has taken this passion to a new level. His work has recently won several important international contests including a Grand Prize in the prestigious Olympus Summer Photo Competition.
After over 30 years Ray’s creativity is at full force. His photographs and paintings continue to flow from his home studio at a rapid pace. His life on Maui is central to his work and it shows in almost every image he produces. His love of the aina, his dog, his world of color and his exciting life are on display in every print, painting and giclée.
“Painting and living on Maui is the realization of my dreams. I feel like a child again. There is so much here to photograph and paint -- I will never run out of inspiration!”
